Brainstorm Blog #1

For my Zine project, I was scrolling through lists of writing prompts for inspiration when I came across one that was just, “What if humans had wings?” From there, my brain just started running wild with ideas and possibilities; for example, what kind of wings? Bird wings are the obvious, but could they also have insect wings? Butterfly wings? Maybe bat or dragon wings? And would they just be white, angel style? Or could they be all different, like different types of birds and insects? Different colorations and shapes depending on species, traits based on climate and environment, and even sex-specific differences. What would society look like? What would have to change in order to accommodate winged people? Clothing would certainly have to be different, as well as furniture such as beds and chairs. Transportation systems would certainly be very different, since people could just fly everywhere and human-sized wings wouldn’t really fit in cars or trains. Would there be something like air traffic control, but for people who fly? Would you have to take a test in order to freely occupy airspace, like a drivers’ test? Would schools commonly teach aviation, or would it be something more optional, like swimming lessons? Would there be sports based on flight? Races, mid-air ball sports, weightlifting. How would wings integrate into social norms? Would it be popular to style them a certain way, or to dye them? Would certain types of wings be more desirable than others? When I really dive in and think about it, a world where everyone has a pair of wings on their back would be very different from the one we live in today, and it’s fun to wonder and theorize about.
